Why spotted gum is the most popular hardwood choice for Central Coast homes.
Spotted gum is the most requested species across our Central Coast projects. It is hard, stable, and the colour range -- from light honey to deep chocolate -- means it works in almost any home. I have sanded hundreds of spotted gum floors from Terrigal to Gosford and the results are consistently outstanding.
With a Janka hardness of 11 kN, spotted gum handles heavy foot traffic, pets, and furniture without denting easily. Compared to softer species like Tasmanian Oak (5.5 kN), you get significantly better wear resistance. For families with kids and dogs, it is the practical choice.
We finish all spotted gum floors with Bona products. Bona Traffic HD in a matte or satin sheen brings out the natural grain without an artificial shine. For a more natural look, Bona Hard Wax Oil penetrates the timber and gives a hand-finished feel that many clients prefer.
Spotted gum sits in the mid-to-premium range for Australian hardwoods. The initial cost is higher than pine or Tasmanian Oak, but the longevity more than compensates. A well-maintained spotted gum floor can last 80 years or more with periodic recoating every 8 to 12 years. See our care guide for maintenance tips.
