A step-by-step look at how we sand and finish timber floors.
We visit your home to inspect the floor, check the subfloor condition, discuss finish options, and provide a written quote. We will tell you what to expect, how long it will take, and what you need to do to prepare. Most jobs need furniture moved out of the rooms being sanded -- we can help with that if needed.
We start with a coarse grit to remove the old finish and level the floor. Then medium grit to smooth out scratches from the coarse pass. Finally a fine grit for a perfectly smooth surface. All our machines run through Bona dust extraction systems, so there is minimal dust in your home. We also edge-sand along walls and hand-sand corners that the big machine cannot reach.
We fill gaps between boards using a Bona two-pack filler mixed with sanding dust from your floor, so the colour matches. Once the filler sets, we do a final fine sand, vacuum thoroughly, and apply the first coat of finish. For Bona Traffic HD, this is usually a coat of Bona Prime followed by the first coat of Traffic HD.
Light abrasion between coats, then the final coat of finish. Most floors get three coats total. By the end of day 3, the floor is walkable in socks. Full cure takes about 7 days -- no rugs, no furniture dragging, no wet mopping during that period.
