How to bring a weathered deck back to life with proper sanding and oiling.
Central Coast decks take a beating from salt air, UV, rain, and foot traffic. The most common issues we see are greying, cupping, splinters, and old oil or paint breaking down. Most of these are fixable with a proper sand and re-oil. The timber underneath is usually in better shape than it looks.
We start with a coarse sand to strip the old finish and remove the weathered surface layer. Then medium and fine sanding to get a smooth, splinter-free surface. We wash down with Bona Deep Clean to remove any remaining residue, let the deck dry, then apply the oil.
For Central Coast conditions, we recommend penetrating oils rather than film-forming finishes. Bona Decking Oil or a quality Australian-made deck oil gives UV protection and water resistance without peeling or flaking. We can tint the oil to change the colour or keep it natural depending on your preference.
A well-oiled deck should be re-oiled every 12 to 18 months on the Central Coast. North-facing decks and areas that get full sun may need it more often. Between oiling, keep the deck clean with a broom and occasional wash. Do not use a high-pressure washer -- it damages the timber fibres and shortens the life of the boards.
