Understanding the differences between Bona Traffic HD, Mega, and Hard Wax Oil.
Every floor we finish gets a Bona product. We have tried other brands over the years and keep coming back to Bona for consistency, durability, and the range of finishes available. As a Bona-certified applicator, we get access to their full professional product line and technical support.
This is our standard recommendation for most residential floors. It is a two-component waterborne polyurethane that cures to an extremely hard, scratch-resistant surface. Traffic HD is low-odour, non-yellowing, and available in matte, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss sheens. Cure time is about 7 days to full hardness, but you can walk on it with socks after 24 hours.
A single-component polyurethane that costs less than Traffic HD and applies in fewer coats. It is a solid choice for bedrooms, studies, and lower-traffic areas. Not quite as hard as Traffic HD, but still well above most competitors. Good option when budget is a factor.
This gives a natural, matte-satin look that feels like bare timber underfoot. It penetrates the grain rather than sitting on top as a film. Great for spotted gum and blackbutt where you want the timber to feel authentic. Requires more frequent maintenance (re-oiling every 12 to 18 months in high traffic areas) but repairs are easy -- you just oil the affected area, no full resand needed.
